Uncertainty quantification in shallow water-sediment flows: A stochastic Galerkin shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic model

چکیده
All shallow water hydro-sediment-morphodynamic (SHSM) models are prone to uncertainty arising from inadequate representation of the underlying physics and error in input parameters. At time writing, most SHSM solve deterministic problems, whilst studies quantification remain rare. Here a new stochastic model is proposed, extended well-balanced, operator-splitting-based, generalized polynomial chaos Galerkin (gPC-SG) solver one-dimensional hydrodynamic equations. A series probabilistic numerical tests carried out, corresponding idealized dam break flow over fixed bed laboratory experiments flow-sediment-bed evolutions induced by sudden landslide failure. The proposed modelling framework shows promise for water-sediment flows erodible beds.

A Discontinuous Galerkin Global Shallow Water Model
A discontinuous Galerkin shallow water model on the cubed sphere is developed, thereby extending the transport scheme developed by Nair et al. The continuous flux form nonlinear shallow water equations in curvilinear coordinates are employed. The spatial discretization employs a modal basis set consisting of Legendre polynomials. Fluxes along the element boundaries (internal interfaces) are app...
متن کاملHigh-Frequency Acoustic Sediment Classification in Shallow Water
A geoacoustic inversion technique for high-frequency (12 kHz) multibeam sonar data is presented as a means to classify the seafloor sediment in shallow water (40–300 m). The inversion makes use of backscattered data at a variety of grazing angles to estimate mean grain size. The need for sediment type and the large amounts of multibeam data being collected with the Naval Oceanographic Office’s ...
متن کاملSediment Transport at Density Fronts in Shallow Water
Our research approach combines advanced observational and modeling techniques. In the field, we will measure velocity and suspended sediment at high resolution (~ few cm) in shallow flows, tracking the evolution of the salinity front through the tidal cycle. The instrumentation will incorporate an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) to measure currents and a profiling conductivitytemperatu...
متن کاملNonclassical Shallow Water Flows
This paper deals with violent discontinuities in shallow water flows with large Froude number F . On a horizontal base, the paradigm problem is that of the impact of two fluid layers in situations where the flow can be modelled as two smooth regions joined by a singularity in the flow field. Within the framework of shallow water theory we show that, over a certain timescale, this discontinuity ...
متن کاملShallow Water Flows in Channels
We consider the shallow water equations for flows through channels with arbitrary cross-section. The system forms a hyperbolic set of balance laws. Exact steady-state solutions are available and are controlled by the relation between the bottom topography and the channel geometry. We use a Roetype upwind scheme for the system. Considerations of conservation, near steady-state accuracy, velocity...
